Alyssa Day Guest Post & Giveaway: Halloween Memories

Hi! Happy Halloween! What else could I talk about this week except favorite Halloween memories? I ADORE Halloween, so I have so many—my kids’ first Halloweens, my first one with Navy Guy, trick-or-treating as a kid—but one of my favorite memories is of Halloween in Japan.

Halloween in Japan with Alyssa DayWe were stationed on Naval Air Station Atsugi, Japan, south of Tokyo (yes, we were there when the earthquake/tsunami happened, and it was horrible beyond all reason, but that’s a story for another time), and we learned that the Japanese don’t celebrate Halloween. So it was a tradition that the base opened up to allow our community’s Japanese families to bring their children to trick-or-treat at the base homes.

This was absolutely amazing. I cannot begin to tell you the joy of watching so many tiny children who were so completely astonished at all the costumes and the decorations and the candy, and of welcoming them as they stopped by with their families. (I’ve attached one of my 7,000 or so pictures, LOL.) We went through more than $200 worth of candy and then I made a quick trip to anything open to buy more.

But the biggest hit of the night was my pug, Daisy, in her Halloween costume. The children—and, in many cases, the parents!—were enthralled with her and wanted to pet her and have their pictures taken with her. I estimate that there are more than 100 Japanese families who have a picture of their kids with my little Daisy. (Photo of Daisy enclosed.) She, of course, in true pug fashion, ate up every ounce of the attention and posed like a little puggy supermodel.

I love Halloween, and can’t wait to dress up like Maleficent this week and hand out candy, but I think nothing will ever match the magic of Halloween in Japan.

Thanks for having me!! What’s your favorite Halloween memory?

Hugs,

Alyssa

Halloween in Atlantis by Alyssa DayNow that Atlantis has finally risen to take its place on the world stage, the Atlantean warriors are having to face some new and interesting dangers — like Halloween parties.

Arrogant warrior Liam doesn’t understand the beautiful, bubbly human whose entire function in life appears to be to plan parties, but he can’t seem to keep away from her, either. Jamie, who considers herself to be completely unflappable–the hallmark of a great event planner–doesn’t understand why the far-too-serious Atlantean manages to get under her skin with every single encounter. Even if he is the sexiest man she has ever seen.

When the two of them are thrown together to solve a mystery surrounding the queen’s missing jewels, sparks fly, secrets are revealed, and Halloween has never been hotter.

This novelette (longer than a short story, shorter than a novella) is perfect for reading on a coffee break – or in between handing out candy to trick-or treaters.
