Join VBC for a Re-Read of Halfway to the Grave

Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost // VBCWay back when VBC used to host monthly group reads. (How many of you remember those days?) We’re revisiting our roots this week, because today—yes, Halloween—is the 10-year anniversary of the release of Jeaniene Frost’s Halfway to the Grave, and we want to relive falling in love with Cat and Bones all over again.

The Night Huntress series has been listed on the recommendations pages here at VBC for as long as those pages have existed (eight years, if you’re counting). As someone who adores when urban fantasy and paranormal romance intermingle, Halfway to the Grave and the subsequent novels hit all my buttons. Cat is a complex character who has long been coming to terms with her place in the world, her half-vampire status, and some, shall we say, unique skills. Her interactions with Bones in the first book are pure urban fantasy. They’re on a mission, they’re violent, she doesn’t even like him…and then they’re perfect together. (And one of my all-time favorite couples.)

Because of my love for Cat, Bones, and the rest of the Night Huntress team, we’re going to re-read Halfway to the Grave together at VBC. (Okay, it’s Beth’s first time reading the book, but aren’t you a little jealous she’s getting to read it for the first time?)

And, you guessed it, we want you to join us.

We’ll have a halfway (ha! get it?) check in next Tuesday, Nov. 7, where you can share where you’re at in the book, and we’ll have a few questions about how you feel about the book the second/third/twenty-seventh (or first, no judgment!) round. Then we’ll have a final “our thoughts” post on Nov. 14. I know y’all, and two weeks is probably just find for reading this book. If you aren’t done by Nov. 14, though, no shame. It’s busy. Join when you can, share what you love, and get your book geek on with us.

The giddiness is strong with this one!

I’d love to see VBC fans who haven’t yet discovered Cat and Bones (both of them, or whoever is hiding under a rock) to get to know them, so next year, one of our dynamic duo could FINALLY take The Alpha Showdown title.

Take about serendipity-I just finished rereading this whole series this week following the complete reading order at Jeaniene’s website to I could include the novellas and the Night Prince series as well. Best binge reading I have done in a while! Can’t wait for Ian’s book and we need more of Cat and Bones.

Ok I’m in! I started this book once and life happened and I dnf(I know, I know.. don’t hate) so going to get it now and join the read along. Good motivation.

    • I think it can throw you off if you go in expecting a paranormal romance. The series does shift to PNR after this book, but the first Night Huntress novel really reads like an urban fantasy.

I am actually listening to the whole entire Series again right now as we speak… Including the books about Spade, Mencaries, & Vlad! I have literally listened to These books more times than I can count! They have actually became part of my extended family LOL! And I have to agree that Jeaniene and Tavia are A dynamic duo because Jeaniene is an amazingly talented writer and then she has Tavia come in behind her and bring her books to life like no other! Whenever I see any book with that time I will definitely put it in my library! I’m on the only one that thinks this Series would be an awesome group of movies! #CannotWaitForIansBook
