Sunstone's Fire by Lia Davis // VBC Lia Davis is launching a new paranormal romance series on April 8, and we’ve snagged an exclusive taste. Sunstone’s Fire is the first in her new Cursed in Stone series (pre-order it). We’ve got a witch trying to avoid her fate (and fighting her magic side), a hero seeking solace, and a curse trying to drive them apart. Serious chemistry beats curses every day, though, and an HEA is in store.

VBC has an exclusive excerpt from Chapter One of the book. You can read the first two parts of the chapter at I Smell Sheep and Grave Tells, respectively. Read to the end for a giveaway, too!

Chapter One, Part 3 from Sunstone’s Fire

A loud crash jolted Haylee upright in her bed. Her heart pounded as she tried to focus in the dim light filtering into her bedroom from the living room. She always kept the light on in there due to guests coming and going. But she only had one guest.

Reaching over to the nightstand, she felt around for her glasses, and then slid them on before getting out of bed. She grabbed her robe off the chair in front of her dresser on the way out the door.

Tying the sash, she noticed her guest, Nate, bent over. His lean, muscular, and shirtless back flexed as he stretched to pick up something from the floor. Warmth she’d never experienced before filled her. Then she realized she was ogling the man. No. She couldn’t get involved with him or anyone.

Romance was off limits for her. She fell too easily, cared too much. So men were out. She would not suffer a broken heart as her mother and grandmother had. All because of a family curse that caused the men they loved to die.

When she got within a few feet of him, he threw up his hand. “Don’t come any closer. There’s glass everywhere.”

She glanced to the accent table against the wall a few feet from the entryway of the great room. The vase that had once held a dozen red roses wasn’t on the table, but rather on the floor. In a million pieces. Glass, water, and roses littered the foyer. “What happened?”

Nate straightened and faced her. She had to force herself to stay put. He was fit and looking yummy in nothing but his jeans. He’s not for you, Haylee.

“I’m not really sure. I stepped off the stairs and the vase fell.” He drew his brows together and stared at the mess on the floor. “This may sound crazy, but I swear it was thrown by someone or something.”

She pursed her lips. It’d been quiet around there for the past year. The tourists she counted on to keep the B&B busy had lessened. They came to experience the ghostly activities from Lafayette Cemetery across the street, but with the lack of noises and moving objects, rumors started circling that the stories were all made up.

“No, it doesn’t sound crazy.” She moved to the supply closet under the stairs and pulled out the Wet Vac. Nate took the vacuum from her and proceeded to clean up the floor. “I can do that.”

“You don’t have shoes on.”

She glanced at his feet and frowned. “Neither do you?”

He looked at her over his shoulder, one brow raised in challenge and his lips curved in a playful smile. “I’m already over here.”

“Have it your way.” A smile tugged at the corners of her lips and she watched him clean up the glass and water.

When he finished, he handed the dozen roses to her. “You really didn’t have to do that.” She offered again.

“I felt like it was my fault somehow.”

“Don’t. The ghosts don’t like roses.”

He stilled and stared at her. “Ghosts?”
