We’re edging up on Halloween. While buying skeleton hand salad servers and zombie paraphernalia is a good start, I thought we should talk about our favorite paranormal creatures throughout the week. That means lists of favorite vampires, shifters, demons and the like — with polls and giveaways.
And what better way to kick things off than with my favorite supernatural types: vampires.
Bones (Night Huntress series): It’s not really a surprise that I’m leading this list with Crispin “Bones” Russell from Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series. He fared well in the Alpha Showdown. He made my list of top vampire lovers. And, well, I’m a bit of a Jeaniene Frost fangirl. But if you need reasons to love the vampire: stealth, experience (lethal and seductive, folks), fearsome and utterly loyal, especially to his lovely lady Cat. Also, the man knows how to bite properly. (Don’t know Bones? Pick up Halfway to the Grave, and get acquainted.)
Ethan Sullivan (Chicagoland Vampires series): Ethan. Freaking. Sullivan. Gorgeous Master vampire with green eyes and a rocking body (it’s said his visual is based on David Beckham). He’s also an asshole. And, well, I kind of have a thing for assholes with fangs. Enough said. (Haven’t met Ethan? Pick up Some Girls Bite.)
Lestat de Lioncourt (The Vampire Chronicles): French nobleman, actor and rockstar? Both cruel and engaging, it’s hard not to love both Lestat’s brutality and his longing to be known. Plus, sometimes I just appreciate a vampire willing to get bloody. The duality of charisma and danger = win. (I find it hard to believe you’re unfamiliar with Lestat, but just in case, he first appeared in Interview with the Vampire.)
Eric Northman (Southern Vampire Mysteries/Sookie Stackhouse series): The beauty of Eric Northman is he’s truly other. No matter how much he cares for Sookie, he will always do things in his own way. He loves her… in his own way. His emotions fluctuate rapidly, vacillating from kind to heartless within a moment. He’s happy to kill. He’s also happy to spend alone time with a certain mostly-human waitress. Also, the Viking part doesn’t hurt nor does the Alexander Skarsgard visual I now get compliments of True Blood. (Eric takes a more dominate role in the series in the fourth book, Dead to the World.)
The Brothers (Black Dagger Brotherhood series): I’m cheating a little here. You see, J.R. Ward has created numerous vampire warriors — they are bigger, stronger and feed only from their own kind, natch — that it becomes volatile when I call out favorites. They’re fighting a war, they find mates, they drink blood and it’s all pretty badass. Bravely, I will say, there are two Brotherhood members who have remarkable tales, great characterizations and balance ruthless and loving just right: Rehvenge and Zsadist. (Read about Zsadist in Lover Awakened and Rehvenge in Lover Avenged.)
Now it is your turn. Vote in the poll and leave comments sharing your favorite vampires and why. It was hard to narrow this to five, and I will be disappointed if I don’t see some love for other favorites in the comments. So hit it and hit it hard.
Those who comment will be entered to win a signed copy of The Sexiest Vampire Alive by Kerrelyn Sparks, a copy of Must Love Vampires by Heidi Betts and vamp-y swag. Open internationally. Enter on or before 11:59 p.m. CST Oct. 31.
