Reading Escapes with Vampire Book ClubToday we’re continuing the kickoff for our Reading Escapes event — you know, the one where we’ll be giving away 30+ books, hosting your favorite authors and giving you tons of great books to escape with — by bringing in more of our favorite bloggers to tell us which novels provide them the ultimate escape. (We’ll have suggested escapes all week long. Missed yesterday’s post? Read Part 1)

Tomorrow we’ll announce three big contests. In the meantime, here’s what our friends say you should read.

What’s your ultimate escape book or series and why?
If I HAD to choose one adult novel, if would be the paranormal romance Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night by Kresley Cole. Out of all the books I’ve ever read in my life, this one has resonated with me the most. I’ve also reread it 10x now, since buying it a very long time ago. Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t reread books, except for maybe one or two, and even then, it is an extremely rare occurrence.

I also wanted to include a YA dystopian with zombies: Enclave by Ann Aguirre. Read that back in January 2011, and, considering how critical I am of YA novels, I was flabbergasted when this book blew me away. I loved it, and I was so sad when I realized how long the wait for OUTPOST would be. [Ed. note: VBC has read an advance copy of Enclave as well, and Tori’s right. This one is straight-up amazing. Expect a VBC review in April.]

What’s your ultimate escape book or series and why?
1 – The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. I LOVE this series mostly because it’s very unique even though it’s about vampires. Jeaniene has a very special way of creating engrossing characters with flashy personalities and wicked sense of humor. May it be Cat, Bones, Ian, Vlad, and I’ll even include Mencheres now that I’ve read Eternal Kiss of Darkness, you are bound to have a good time. And don’t get me started on the sultry scenes this woman can write!

2 – The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. This one is special to me because it was my first favorite series. I picked up the first book only a few weeks after I started reading for fun (something I thought was impossible only 3 years ago!) and I almost gave up because of all the Moroi, Strigoi, Dhampir vocabulary. For those of you who don’t know, my main language is French, and my English was really average (OK, maybe poor…) back then, so it was a challenge. But geez am I thankful I kept on reading! I LOVE the world, the characters, the action. Richelle really has a talent for roller coasters of emotions. I laughed, I cried, I put the book down (I’d throw it but I’m anal with book condition) because I just couldn’t bear it anymore at times. Shadow Kiss especially is my favorite, the end killed me! Vampire Academy is by far my favorite YA series 🙂

[Ed. note: Tynga and VBC can be besties over Vampire Academy love. All our regular readers know of our Richelle Mead love.]

What’s your ultimate escape book or series and why?
That’s an easy one. Wicked Game by Jeri Smith-Ready. I can’t even remember how many times I’ve read this book. I once owned 5 copies but now I have it narrowed down to 3. One is the “reading copy” & is all creased with a cracked spine (shudders), one is signed and one is a copy I won at a charity auction and it’s marked up with notes by Jeri.

Wicked Game is pure escapist fun for me. It has everything I love. A smart, snarky female protagonist, a super sexy vampire, hot sex, action and something new to me….a playlist. At the time I didn’t listen to music very often but the series setting is at a radio station (WVMP). The DJ’s are vampires that are “stuck” in the time when they are turned. Music is almost an additional character and it really changed the way I think about music. I didn’t even own an iPod before reading Wicked Game. Now music is a huge part of my life and reading experience.

Wicked Game is my go to book if I’ve had a bad day, read a bad book or if I just need to revisit old friends. I know exactly where to flip to go to my favorite passages and quotes.

A few others I always go back to are: Bitten by Kelley Armstrong, the first 4 Sookie books by Charlaine Harris, the first two Cat & Bones by Jeaniene Frost and Z’s book from the BDB series by JR Ward.
