We’ve only read a taste of Regan Hastings’ Visions of Magic, but we’re excited for the full novel, which hits shelves on Feb. 1. (Pre-order it from Amazon or the Book Depository now.) All that said, though, Regan Hastings is actually a new pen name for a popular contemporary romance author. (We’re talking double-digits of books in the Romance section.)
She’ll reveal her ‘other’ name soon. We’re keeping the secret, but trust us when we say she knows how to craft a relationship. That’s why we’ve asked her to tell us about the hero-heroine dynamic in Visions of Magic.
THE DYNAMIC BETWEEN A WITCH AND HER WARRIOR
By Regan Hastings
In Visions of Magic, heroine Shea Jameson discovers in the opening pages that she’s a witch when her powers awaken for the first time. This is an extremely dangerous discovery, both for the man she sets on fire and for her. Shea lives in a modern day society that reviles, hunts, and even kills witches. (You can read Chapter 1 on my website and, if you enter my contest, I’ll email Chapter 2 to you.)
Shea faces death at the hands of a panic-stricken mob determined to put her to death. So you would think she’d be happy to be saved by a warrior who claims he exists only to protect her. Except…
“Funny,” she said softly, “I don’t feel ‘saved’. I feel trapped.” She pulled free of his grip, though her body missed his touch…She stared up at him as the moonlight shone on his features, giving him a shadowy, evil look that sent her heart plummeting to the soles of her feet. “You’re crazy.”
“No,” he said, his voice clipped. “But I am out of patience. I have waited centuries for this day. And I will not wait any longer.” He reached out, scooped her up into his arms, and before she could shout a protest, carried her back into the room and tossed her onto the bed. “There is no escape from your destiny, Shea. Tonight it begins.”
She scrambled away from him, never daring to take her gaze from his. “What? What begins tonight?”
Torin walked across the room, opened the door and stepped through it. Before he closed it again, he sent her one long look and said simply, “The mating ritual.”
The dynamic between Shea and Torin was a lot of fun to play with. (Yes, I’m evil. I enjoy torturing my characters.) From Shea’s point of view, she just met this muscle-bound man who rescued her from the mob only to lock her in a room with the threat of a mating ritual echoing in her mind. Her Eternal, he calls himself, as if she’s supposed to know what that means.
Torin has a completely different perspective. He doesn’t intend to rape her – of course he doesn’t. He cannot fathom why she would consider their inevitable mating to be rape. He has watched over her lifetime after lifetime, guarding her through many incarnations across the centuries, waiting for her magical powers to awaken so that they can finally mate as they were destined to do from the beginning.
As you might imagine, he’s grown a little impatient. Males of every species tend to get cranky without sex.
Shea wants him despite herself, but she’s not about to give in to lust for a stranger, no matter how intoxicating he may be. She’s been alone in the world for ten years, since her beloved aunt was burned at the stake. She knows how to take care of herself, and she’s determined to escape from Torin so she can do just that.
Of course, it won’t be as simple as that.
Torin is an Eternal, an immortal. If you were immortal, how would you live your life differently?
Although VISIONS OF MAGIC is the first book by Regan Hastings, it’s far from the author’s first book. Under another name, her contemporary romance novels number in the double digits, and she has been nominated six times for the prestigious RITA award from the Romance Writers of America. Her romance novels have appeared many times on the USA TODAY bestsellers list. She’s holding a contest for readers to guess her true identity for a chance to win a Federal Bureau of Witchcraft fleece jacket. Enter at www.reganhastings.com. The contest ends February 1, the release date of VISIONS OF MAGIC, so enter right away!
