So this was an eBook I preordered on a whim. It was the right price and it was by Gena Showalter. So even though the book description was ridiculously brief and vague, it was pretty much a no brainer to click the preorder button. After reading Ever Night I am extremely happy with my purchase and am now in the uncomfortable position of being hungry for more.

On the exact second of Rose Pascal eighteenth birthday, she finds herself transported to a nightmarish world. She is captured by monsters out of her worst nightmares who throw her at the feet of the most beautiful man she has ever seen. In an insulting and insufferable manner he explains she is a dimension walker. That she is bound to his world and is forced to return to his world for a set period of time on each birthday. He also offhandedly informs her that her life depends on whether or not he finds her useful.

The book begins with Rose being 18 and by the end she is 20. That could seem like a lot of ground to cover, but this book flies by. Young Rose is a timid, whiny and naïve girl, but by then end of the novel she is a forceful, vibrant, and brave woman. There are lot of time jumps in Ever Night; we meet Rose at 18 but then are quickly introduced to her again on her nineteenth birthday when she is forced to return to the nightmare world. We only find out in retrospection what she has gone through in the past year.

So here is my only real criticism of the book: it is really short. I mean you blink and it’s over. The story feels bigger than the novella actually is. Therefore, at times I felt like I might have missed something. The scenes between Vasili (our hero) and Rose are hot and full of chemistry, but with the amount of time that they actually spent together it doesn’t always ring true. I just wanted more character development and more foundation.

Ever Night is definitely action packed. At one point Rose literally appears out of nowhere in the middle of a battlefield. (Which extremely pisses off our hero.) The pacing is as quick as the action, but it can feel likes it’s tripping over itself to get to the finish line. Which left me, at times, shaking my head wondering how we got where we were.

That being said if you are looking for a quick diversion into a fantasy world with a kickass heroine and mouth-watering hero, you can’t go wrong in picking up this little gem by Gena Showalter. Hopefully she will return to this interesting new world sooner than later.
