After my mad gush-fest on Kristen Painter’s Blood Rights yesterday, I’m encouraged to move forward with an overhaul to the VBC recommendations page. I know you guys use it quite a bit, and I try to make sure it only has the best of the best. If it’s on that page, I’ll personally vouch that it rules. . . . → Click here to continue reading Help fashion the new, improved Recommendations page

This week has already been crazy at VBC HQ. While getting everything prepped for Fall into (Urban) Fantasy, I also popped in at Heroes & Heartbreakers twice. First, I shared five YA alpha heroes that are sure to make adult readers swoon (Dimitri, Prince Ash and Jace lead the list). Then, I wrote up a recap of the Night Huntress series thus far. If you haven’t read the earlier books, but still want to read One Grave at a Time next week, the post will get you up-to-date, but it’s heavy on the spoilers. . . . → Click here to continue reading Book Bits: Downside Ghosts sneak, American Gods for TV, Rob Thurman hospitalized, excerpts and Contest Roundup

Instead of giving you a play-by-play of Home Improvement, I’ll just hit the highlights. Above all the others, there were three stories that stood out to me as the best: Melissa Marr’s “The Strength Inside,” Patricia Brigg’s “Gray” and Stacia Kane’s “Rick the Brave.” . . . → Click here to continue reading Review: Home Improvement: Undead Edition

I’ve been itching for more Downside Ghosts for nearly a year now. Stacia Kane’s series is one of my favorites, and this week we got a taste of what’s to come in book 4. The first half of Sacrificial Magic’s Chapter 1 was posted up on Stellar Four. We get Chess playing teacher to a new debunker and cleaning up the ghostly mess created at the end of City of Ghosts (review). Sacrificial Magic doesn’t hit shelves until March 2011, but Amazon’s already letting us pre-order. And that’s nice. . . . → Click here to continue reading Book Bits: Downside Ghosts and Bloodlines excerpts, Sookie’s finale, Hollows Insider and Contest Roundup

In honor of this fine holiday, I thought we’d talk about character fireworks — specifically those lines and exchanges between hero and heroine that indicate romantic sparks. (Quotes may be from later novels in the series, so spoilers are a possibility. Titles appear before all quotes to help you skip, if you like.) . . . → Click here to continue reading Fireworks: Character sparks

Today we’re trying something new. Instead of simply the triumphant return of contest roundup (which is toward the end), we’re giving you some of the best book-related news and happenings from the last week. Chances are we’ve already told you about these via Twitter or Facebook. But those move so quickly. In the event you missed any news, it’s all piled in on convenient place. Also, we’re embedding the Breaking Dawn: Part 1 trailer because we like weddings and broken headboards. . . . → Click here to continue reading Book Bits: Downside Ghosts, Vlad, Breaking Dawn, True Blood and Skarsgard awesomeness, more

In our If You Like post on Unholy Ghosts and Mind Games, we wondered what would happen if the main characters of Stacia Kane and Carolyn Crane’s novels threw down. The resulting Twitter battle between the two fantastic authors had me giggling. It went a little something like this:
@StaciaKane: Oh, please. Chess could kick Justine’s ass. . . . → Click here to continue reading Character cagematches? Who should throw down?

There’s a reason Unholy Ghosts and the three current Downside novels often top our recommendations. We also know you’ve listened, which means — what do you read while waiting for Downside 4? . . . → Click here to continue reading If you like Unholy Ghosts… read Mind Games
