A Note from Chelsea / VBC: All the suggested poolside reading lists we see online point to cheeky contemporary novels or lighthearted romps. Well, at VBC we know there are plenty of books featuring paranormal elements, badass heroines and sexy heroes that are perfect for reading out under the sun. So, of course, we’ve decided to do our own Beach Reads picks. Each Friday for the next several weeks, we’ll share one VBC reviewers picks for the ultimate beach reads. Today Amy suggests some fun and action-packed reads.

Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs by Molly Harper AMY’S BEACH READ PICKS

Bringing a book on vacation is a must on my list. Right beside the sunscreen and swimsuit.

Part of what I love about vacationing is the travel time. Sometimes, depending on the vacation, that’s the best opportunity I have to read. I just love it when I book grabs me and I can’t stop thinking about it, almost to the point where I could be in paradise but all I want to do it stay behind and finish my book!

Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs (Jane Jameson #1) by Molly Harper

When I’m on vacation, I don’t want to read something too dark or serious. Molly Harper is perfect for this. All of her books are full of fun and humor and they don’t take themselves too seriously. While you can pretty much pick up any Molly Harper book and not be disappointed in this aspect, I like to go back to the beginning with her Jane Jameson series.

Jane is just your typical small-town children’s librarian until the day she’s fired and all she’s given for all her time and hard work is a gift certificate to Shenanigan’s. Deciding to put the “gift” certificate to good use Jane leaves the bar slightly inebriated, and on her way home a case of mistaken identity (to that of a deer) causes Jane to be shot and left for dead. Lucky for Jane the handsome stranger she met at the bar decided to turn Jane into a vampire rather than see her die. This is just the beginning of Jane’s immortal life.

Scarlet (Scarlet #1) by A.C. Gaughen

Another thing for me regarding vacation reading, going along with the light and funny, is I don’t really want to think too much. I’m on vacation; I leave the craziness of real life behind. So A.C. Gaughen’s Scarlet, a YA retelling of the Robin Hood legend is perfect. Everyone knows the story of Robin Hood, but Gaughen puts a twist on the legend and makes Will Scarlet actually a woman. You can imagine this adds a nice layer of intrigue to the “band of merry men” aspect of the book.

So you can sit back, relax, and see where the pieces of this familiar story line up with the retelling. This was a surprising book for me in the fact that I kept seeing it mentioned in multiple places and when I finally picked it up I couldn’t stop thinking about it when I had to put it down again, and therefore I had to pick it right back up again.

Magic Bites (Kate Daniels #1) by Ilona Andrews
Get the book at: Book Depository or Amazon

The most important thing for a beach read is to get lost in the story you’re reading to the point where hours have passed but you don’t realize it because you’re caught up with your book. I would be remiss not to mention the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. Truly one of my very favorite series. Picked up when I was looking for something new to read, I soon found I had made it through the entire series in a weekend.

As with any series, you obviously need to start from the beginning. In this case Magic Bites. Mercenary Kate Daniels takes on the task of finding her guardian’s killer. To do this she must gather information and work with the different supernatural factions in Atlanta including shape shifters, vampires, and other magical users. The last thing Kate wants to do is draw attention to herself within the magical community. So, the question is, can she find the killer while still trying to keep herself in the shadows all while dealing with an extremely narcissistic (and hot) Beast Lord?
