VBC’s Most Anticipated Books of 2017

The VBC is already digging through release calendars looking for the best books to tell you about in 2017. Instead of making you wait until those books come out, we’ve each put together a list of the books we are most excited to read in 2017.

Did your “can’t wait for it” book make the list?

Dude, Yes // VBC

CHELSEAThe Stone Sky by NK Jemisin // VBC

The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin (Broken Earth #3)
Release Date: Aug. 15, 2017

I can thank VBC’s Jannelle for hooking me on this series. The first book The Fifth Season was fascinating and engaging and twisty. It also won the Hugo Award. The second book The Obelisk Gate sank its hooks deeper into me. I flew through the pages as fast as I could, needing to know what would happen next. Now I’m counting down to August’s release of The Stone Sky.

Archangel’s Viper by Nalini Sigh (Guild Hunter #10)
Release Date: TBD Fall

The Untamed Vampire by Kate Baxter (The Last True Vampire #4)
Release Date: May 2, 2017

Vampires + magic + the most alpha werewolf = paranormal romance junkie catnip. Gimme this book now.

Blade Bound by Chloe Neill (Chicagoland Vampires #13)
Release Date: April 25, 2017

I’m not ready to say goodbye to Merit and Ethan. I’m not ready to bid adieu to the Cadogan vampires. But I am ready to see what Chloe has in store for them. Plus, I know we’re getting a werewolf spinoff. I’m eager to see what kind of sendoff Ethan and his Sentinel get.

Waking Gods by Sylvain Neuvel (Themis Files #2)
Release Date: April 4, 2017

I’m really picky about audio books. So I went around on Twitter asking for great ones. Bree from Kit Rocha recommended Sleeping Gods to me. The sci-fi novel grounded in character development, determination and the need to understand the world had a full-cast narration, which works wonderfully in a novel comprised of interview transcripts, journals and the like. It was one of those sit-in-the-car-when-you-get-home-to-finish-the-chapter kind of audio books. (The romance subplot has issues, but otherwise stellar.) I’m eager to see where the journey goes in Waking Gods. (And, yes, I intend to get it on audio again.)

Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo // VBCJO

Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo (DC Icons#1)
Release Date: Aug. 29, 2017

The first in a four book series by different YA authors about the DC characters, Leigh Bardugo takes on the Princess of the Amazons. If the cover’s anything to go by (and how much I loved her Six of Crows duology), this is going to be epic.

The Dark Calling by Kresley Cole (The Arcana Chronicles #5)
Release Date: Spring 2017

I’m more than ready for the twists and turns Kresley Cole has in store for Evie and the other Arcana, particular after that ending in Arcana Rising. Team Cajun. All. The. Way.

Untitled by Sarah J. Maas (Throne of Glass #6)
Release Date: Sept. 5, 2017

The end is nigh, and while I can’t wait to find out how Aelin will finally reclaim her crown, it’s Maas so I’m also pretty terrified—there will be tears, possibly ugly crying… and I’m going to love it!

The Chosen by J.R. Ward(Black Dagger Brotherhood #15
Release Date: April 4, 2017

Three words people: Xcor and Layla *mic drop*

Unholy Luck by Stacia Kane (Downside Ghosts #6)
Release Date: TBD

There’s no official release date for this yet, so this is more of a “most wished for” than a “most anticipated” for 2017. *crosses fingers and toes* I’m having Terrible withdrawals.

A Conjuring of Light by VE Schwab // VBCAMY

A Conjuring of Light by VE Schwab (Shades of Magic #3)
Release Date: Feb. 21, 2017

After the way things ended in A Gathering of Shawdows, plus the fact that this is the last one in the trilogy, you can bet it’s on my list. VE Schwab never lets me down.

White Hot by Ilona Andrews (Hidden Legacy #2)
Release Date: May 30, 2017

Nevada and Rogan, that’s all. Well, that and, Ilona Andrews is just one of a handful of my favorite authors releasing multiple books in 2017 (I’m looking at you Jeaniene Frost and Seanan McGuire just to name a couple). White Hot is one I’ve been anticipating since Burn for Me came out in 2014.

Silver Silence by Nalini Singh (Psy-Changeling Trinity #1)
Release Date: June 13, 2017

Really looking forward to seeing this new chapter in the Psy-Changeling world. Early snippets and sneak peeks are already promising.

Wanted and Wired by Vivien Jackson (Tether #1)
Release Date: April 4, 2017

Gotta throw in a debut series on here. The first line of the blurb on Goodreads says: ” A rip-roarin’ new snarky, sexy sci-fi paranormal romance series with the perfect balance of humor, heat, and heart.” That line right there meets a lot of my checklist requirements, plus I’m really getting into reading more sci-fi.

Blade Bound by Chloe Neill (Chicagoland Vampires #13)
Release Date: April 25, 2017

Every great series has to come to an end eventually and Blade Bound is the end of the tremendously popular Chicagoland Vampire series. I’m so sad this is the end, but with all the set-up in past books of things to come, it’s also one I’m looking forward to most. Yes, there apparently is a spinoff in the works, but having Merit and Ethan and Co. in the spotlight will be supremely missed.

White Hot by Ilona Andrews // VBCMARGARET

White Hot by Ilona Andrews (Hidden Legacy #2)
Release Date: May 30, 2017

My #1 Drop-Everything-and-Read-This-Book-As-Soon-As-I-Get-My-Grubby-Little-Hands-On-It is White Hot by Ilona Andrews. I loved Burn For Me and have been waiting (not at all patiently) for a year and a half for this book. As soon as I finish it I’m sure that Wildfire, book three in the series, will take its place at the top of the list. It’s out this July so at least the wait won’t be quite so excruciating.

I’m always eagerly awaiting the next Kate Daniels and Mercy Thompson, but so is almost everyone I know, so here are a few the less obvious choices on my radar:

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller (Daughter of the Pirate King #1)
Release Date: Feb. 28, 2017

I have always loved Pirates of the Caribbean—the ride, the movies, all of it. So when I saw the tag line about a female Jack Sparrow on Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller I was sold.

The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell
Release Date: July 18, 2017

The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell looks a little bit like Shadowhunters, a lot like The Magicians, plus it has time travel. And how could you not be excited about that cover?

Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller
Release Date: Sept. 5, 2017

Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller isn’t out until September so it doesn’t have a cover yet. I’m not sure it even has an official blurb since the one on Goodreads doesn’t say “perfect for fans of ADSOM or Six of Crows.” But it features a gender fluid pickpocket in a competition to join the queen’s band of assassins. How cool is that!

Darkest Night by Cate Tiernan // VBCJANNELLE

White Hot by Ilona Andrews (Hidden Legacy #2)
Release Date: May 30, 2017

This has been on my most anticipated list for the last couple of years and it is finally going to be released this year! Aside from the epic cliffhanger in Burn For Me, I got a sneak peak at Nevada’s next big case and May cannot come soon enough for its release.

Darkest Night by Cate Tiernan (Birthright #2)
Release Date: TBD

This is another of those books I’ve been waiting years for. I devoured Darkest Fear (Birthright #1) in one sitting and cannot wait for the release of the second book in this were-jaguar series to repeat the process.

Borrowed Souls by Chelsea Mueller (Soul Charmer #1)
Release Date: May 2, 2017

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of gritty urban fantasy with a hint of romance and that is exactly what Chelsea’s new book promises to be. You know when you have a feeling about a new series that’s going to knock your socks off? Well, this is it.

Feversong by Karen Marie Moning (Fever #9)
Release Date: Jan. 17, 2017
The Fever Series is one of my top 3 favorite series of all time—and that’s a ballsy statement (do you know how much I read?!). I’m borderline anxious while I’m waiting on the inevitable conclusion to one of my favorite series. Is it even possible to end the Fever series here?

Into the Fire by Jeaniene Frost (Night Prince #4)
Release Date: Feb. 28, 2017

Also high up on my highly anticipated list for 2017 is the final installment of Frost’s Night Prince series. Vlad’s love for his wife Leila inspires a lot of hate from some powerful people and I cannot wait to see the magical story Frost will weave to tie up the loose ends of this series.

Phantom Pains // VBCBETH

Phantom Pains by Mishell Baker (Arcadia Project #2)
Release Date: March 21, 2017
Borderline was unique—a main character with Borderline Personality Disorder? An organization that hires those with mental illnesses because no one will believe their tales of Fairies? Baker created a strong story with an even stronger female main character, and I’m excited to get back into the world of present-day LA, where fairies do exist.
Lost Boy by Christina Henry
Release Date: July 4, 2017
I’m a huge fan of Christina Henry’s Alice in Wonderland duology. She brings back a little bit of the horror into the fairy tales that have gotten so Disney. She also manages to make even those on the side of wrong seem absolutely human in their deeds and desires, no matter how dark. So this new take on Peter Pan is bound to be eye-opening!
Untitled by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kauffman (Illuminae Files #3)
Release Date: October 2017
Seriously, what’s not to anticipate? The closure of a rocket-paced series, told not just in words, but in images and files, that has rebellion, romance, and deep space. The series is unique, fun, and interesting.
Witchy Eye by D.J. Butler
Release Date: March 7, 2017
This just intrigues me. The Appalachia folk magic and the alternate history sound like something right up my alley, and I’m looking forward to getting my hot little hands on it!

Caraval // VBCJENN

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas (A Court of Thorns and Roses #3)
Release Date: May 2, 2017

The way that A Court of Mist and Fury ended made me wish that I had Sarah J. Mass as a personal friend so I could call her up and beg her to tell me what happens. I. Was. Dying! I need this book so be here before my little reader head explodes.

Carval by Stephanie Garber
Release Date: Jan. 31, 2017

I was drawn in by the cover, and then I read the blurb. This book needs to be on my Kindle now!

Etched In Bone by Anne Bishop (The Others #5)
Release Date: March 7, 2017

My favorite author ever, so there is no question that I am dying to read this book. I need to know what happens.

  1. Amy M says:

Ok Chelsea, I am right with you on Archangel’s Viper. Been waiting for years for Nalini to finally give us Venom’s book, and it looks like 2017 is time!!!!! (Rearranging my most anticipated list a bit 🙂 )

Also very interested in Leigh Bardugo taking a crack at Wonder Woman’s story.

Also, Lost Boy looks very interesting. I, too, enjoyed Christina Henry’s reimagining of Alice.

    Overall, great list!

  2. Yvonne says:

Great lists! Also looking forward to Jeaniene Frost’s last Vlad book…Into the Fire.

  3. Mask of Shadows sounds phenomenal, and of course I’m dying to get my hands on White Hot! I think it’s almost time for a re-read of Burn For Me…

  4. Lissa says:

    What about Feversong!?

  5. Angie says:

Great list and my wishful thinking addition would be Patrick Rothfuss’ Doors of Stone to be published. Someone absolutely missing is R. Scott Bakker and his Unholy Consult coming out in July marking the end of the Aspect-Emperor chapter and finally revealing the as yet secret name of the last chapter/trilogy. 🙂

  6. Lissa says:

Also looking forward to the next Dark Artifices book, Lord of Shadows.

  7. Ron Stillman says:

I have written a vampire ebook called “Cult of the Iron Cobra”. I published it on smashwords.com. Do you know where I can get it reviewed?
