This week we’re going YA fantasy for our Win It Wednesday pick. Frostblood by Elly Blake released on Jan. 10, and VBC’s Margaret immediately jumped to read it. …and not just because of that pretty cover. You can check her full review, but she said that it’s a fast read, which is a rare thing in a genre “full of epic tomes.”
She’s not wrong. Plus, there’s a nice duality of fire and frost magics that is fun to read. Here’s the gist:
The Frost King will burn.
Seventeen-year-old Ruby is a Fireblood who has concealed her powers of heat and flame from the cruel Frostblood ruling class her entire life. But when her mother is killed trying to protect her, and rebel Frostbloods demand her help to overthrow their bloodthirsty king, she agrees to come out of hiding, desperate to have her revenge.
Despite her unpredictable abilities, Ruby trains with the rebels and the infuriating—yet irresistible—Arcus, who seems to think of her as nothing more than a weapon. But before they can take action, Ruby is captured and forced to compete in the king’s tournaments that pit Fireblood prisoners against Frostblood champions. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her—and from the icy young man she has come to love.
Vivid and compelling, Frostblood is the first in an exhilarating series about a world where flame and ice are mortal enemies . . . but together create a power that could change everything.
This week our Win It Wednesday is sponsored by Little, Brown & Co. They want to give you the chance to not only win a copy of Frostblood, but also have super fab nails with a fire and frost nail polish duo. Fancy, right? (I’d totally wear the fire one, in case y’all were wondering.)

ABOUT ELLY BLAKE
Elly Blake loves fairy tales, old houses, and owls. After earning a degree in English literature, she held a series of seemingly random jobs, including project manager, customs clerk, graphic designer, and reporter for a local business magazine before finally landing on her current job as a library assistant. She lives in Southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids, and a Siberian Husky mix that definitely shows frostblood tendencies.
Thank you so much for the giveaway!
I’m reading The Women of Brewster Place right now and it’s blowing my mind. Also Nnedi Okorafor’s The Book of Phoenix. It’s good but I don’t like it quite as much as Binti.
Ooo. I need to read that.
Currently reading ‘The Song of Achilles’ by Madeline Miller.
I’m in a reading slump. It has been two weeks since I read anything except for the stuff around my masters thesis. Here’s hoping that changes soon.

I’m in a comfort/re-reading funk at the moment. I’m switching up between re-reading (or audiobook listening to!) Georgette Heyer, Carla Kelly, Judith Lansdowne and MIchelle Sagara (West), Ilona Andrews. Periodically I just love to go back and re-live and re-love my old favorites!
I’m reading Aunt Dimity & the Wishing Well.
