Jeaniene Frost Guest Post & Giveaway: The other “super” in superheroes

logo

[From VBC: We're very excited to have Jeaniene Frost on the blog again today. And we're so anxious for Once Burned, her spinoff book featuring Vlad. It comes out in June and at the end of this post there's a chance to win advanced copies. With that, we turn it over to Jeaniene.]

Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost (Night Prince #1)I’m fresh off a superhero high after seeing The Avengers this weekend, but aside from my new found love for The Hulk, the movie also got me thinking about the attributes of larger-than-life heroes and heroines. If you haven’t seen The Avengers yet, I’ll describe the members of the team. There’s Ironman, a “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” named Tony Stark who fights evil while wearing an incredibly high-tech suit; Thor, demi-god of the planet Asgard, whose hammer-wielding badassery is only eclipsed by his mighty biceps; Steve Rogers’ Captain America, a formerly brave yet scrawny man who was transformed into a superhuman through breakthrough genetic tampering; The Hulk, whose non-mean-green-and-ready-to-ream personality is mild-mannered scientist Bruce Banner; Black Widow, former Russian spy Natasha Romanoff who uses her looks, wit, and lethal fighting skills to save the day; and Clint Barton, nicknamed Hawkeye, a S.H.I.E.L.D agent whose skill with a bow and arrow makes Legolas look like a child playing cowboys and Indians. Although not a fighting member of the Avengers, the mastermind behind them is Nick Fury, human director of the espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D.

What I particularly loved about The Avengers is that three of the six superheroes are regular humans. See, my books feature supernatural creatures – in this case, vampires – fighting evil and finding love with humans. I get asked a lot about compatibility issues in a human/nonhuman relationship and I think the movie gives a great example of how being compatible has more to do with will, perseverance, and bravery than with matching supernatural abilities. Black Widow doesn’t have any otherworldly abilities – or a high-tech Super Suit – yet she’s critical to the success of the Avengers because of her other strengths. Same goes with Hawkeye. Tony Stark, even without his Ironman suit, is still instrumental to the team because of his intelligence. Sure, having the ability to withstand injuries that would kill a normal person (Captain America), or a huge magical hammer (Thor), or enough strength to throw a demi-god around like a rag doll (The Hulk) are also critical, but they’re not enough to defeat the villain and his army without those extraordinary yet “regular” Avengers.

As I said, I’ve played with the same themes in my books. My vampires may have abilities like super strength, telekinesis, mind control, or the ability to fly, but that doesn’t make their human counterparts less extraordinary, in my opinion. Take my upcoming novel, Once Burned. In it, my heroine Leila is a human whose exposure to a massive dose of electricity left her with some unusual abilities; namely, her body gives off voltage and she picks up psychic impressions through touch. While those abilities initially throw her together with my hero, a pyrokinetic vampire named Vlad (yes, that Vlad :)) it’s her mental fortitude that impresses Vlad the most. Without that, Leila would have been merely another tool he used against his enemies. But her inner strength proves so captivating that even the uncrowned Prince of Darkness ends up drawn into the most high-stakes battle of all: falling in love.

I’m going to assume that everyone agrees mental fortitude is important, but just for kicks, if you could have any supernatural ability (flying, mind control, pyrokinesis, telekinesis, shapeshifting, a big magic hammer, Hulking-out, etc.) what would it be? Everyone who answers will be entered to win one of two advance reading copy of Once Burned.

I want the ability to teleport. It is so cool! No need for busses and cars. You can be in any place in the world in seconds.

  3. I would like the ability to borrow abilities like Cat. I cannot wait til this book comes out, loved Cat and Bones!

  4. Megan Cheng says:

Hmm, my first choice would be the ability to wear a leather jumpsuit like cat woman and look good in it. But i don’t think that’s a real superpower so i choose the super power where you change your’e whole body into anyone in the world like on x men.

  5. JessS says:

I’ve always wanted teleportation because a) I’m lazy and b) I want to see the world.
And Ohmigosh the Avengers was SOOOOO GOOD! I saw it with my family and we all loved it.

  6. Mel Thomas says:

If I could have any supernatural ability I would want to have empathic mimicry like Peter Petrelli in Heroes. Being able to absorb and use any ability you came in contact with would be made of awesome.

Can’t wait to read Once Burned. Thanks for the opportunity.

  7. Victoria Sloboda says:

My main power would be to heal but I’d also have to ability to take some of the power of those around me and keep it.
Thank you so much for the giveaway :).

  8. Kelly S says:

    Invisibility!

  9. Ren Puspita says:

Have power to clone my self! So I can read book, do chores, working at the office, napping, all at the same time!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  10. Allison Hickman says:

Healing myself & others, if you can’t really be injured you are pretty invincible!

  11. Emma A says:

Of any superpower I would love to have the ability to read minds at will.
Love your books! Can’t wait to read Once Burned!

  12. Chloé M says:

I guess I’d love to have mind reading abilities. Or be able to teleport myself at will everywhere in the world. It’d be cool cause this way I wouldn’t miss so many bands or events that won’t go to my country haha.

Thanks for the opportunity, Jeaniene’s my favorite author, and the glimpse we’ve seen of Once Burned make me anxious to reas it!

  14. Andie says:

Definitely Teleportation. There are SO many places I want to see but never will because I hate flying, can’t afford to, and can’t reasonably expect to live long enough to visit all of them. OR Time traveling. There are so many things that I would like to see, both past and future.

But you know what would be absolutely cool?? A power to bring the fictional characters to life… oh Bones (i’m tempting to bring Cat too, but i want bones for myself:P) and Vlad and all of my favs… *sigh*

Thank you so much for the giveaway :)

  15. Julie says:

My current ability is to oversleep. No alarm clock made by man can stop me from getting my Zzz. I wish I had the ability to *forget* the books I’ve read so that I could re-read some of my favorite novels (or just Chapter 32) over and over again like it was the first time.

Thanks to Jeaniene for the guest post and the giveaway!

  16. Brandy Swain says:

That’s a tough one but I’m going to go with Teleport, mainly because I want to travel the world but hate to fly! Thanks Jeaniene for the chance to have one of these ARC, I can’t wait to read more of Vlad!

  17. Shonna Messner says:

Mind Control!!!! It would be awesome to get my husband to take care of that list of “need to do” jobs on the fridge

  18. Noreen says:

If I had any superpower I would want the ability to read peoples minds, but only when I wanted to. I wouldn’t want it bombarding me all the time but only when I chose to do it, sometimes it would be really great to be able to look at a person and know exactly what they are thinking.

  19. Heather says:

Definitely mind control! That would come in very handy with the kids.

  20. This was a really great article. I completely agree that mental fortitude is just as important as muscle.

This is so difficult! I think controlling and manipulating technology, like Micah in Heroes, would be wicked useful and scary as hell!

I need Vlad in my life, like yesterday! Thanks for the giveaway! ♥

  21. tacobell says:

Honestly, I’d just like to be Chuck, from the TV series. Not exactly a superpower, but having a super computer in your head, so you can flash on anything CIA-related and knowing any combat skills would be wicked. And I always wanted to say “Guys, I know Kung-Fu!”

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  22. Elizabeth Hull says:

I wouldn’t want to know what people think. Everyone needs privacy. I’d have to say flying. Being able to travel and see the world in a different way would be great!

  23. Courtney says:

Teleportation. To be able to travel from one place to the next in seconds would be sooooo helpful.

  24. Dani Nguyen says:

I think I’d go with telekinesis. Mostly because I’m lazy & it would come in really handy. Like when my book is on the other side of the room & I don’t want to go get it. I would obviously be the lamest super hero ever.

Thanks for the chance to win!

  25. Alyssa says:

    Teleportation!

  26. Tiffaney says:

I would love to fly. I have had many a dream where I can, and it’s pretty cool :) Thanks for the contest1

  27. elizabeth ziko says:

i think it would have to be telekinesis so i could read and still get the cleaning done

  28. JenM says:

I’ve always wanted the ability to heal – both myself and others. I think that would be a great gift to have.

  29. Lea Krnjeta says:

I always wanted to be able to fly.

  30. Annie says:

I’m totally OCD so mind control would probably give me that secret thrill I’ve always wanted. *evil laugh*

  31. CdnMrs says:

I think I’d like to have the ability to Hulk-Out, it would totally make mood swings worth it.

I also want to throw in that I want Loki’s hat. If choosing the most kick-ass helmet/hat was a superpower that guy would totally have it. :)

  32. Kimberley Kiera says:

Depending on what the limitations were, I’d go with shapeshifting or mind reading/control. Shapeshifting only if I could look any way I wanted. Otherwise the mind reading/control…so MANY possibilities for that one!

  33. Stephanie says:

I want telekinesis. Then I could feel like a Jedi…

  34. Annie says:

Seriously I wish for my superpower to be always skinny lady. LOL you know can eat regular food without gaining weight. I would be called Super Matabolism Women. It would be great. // ok seriously. I would way to scary with mind control so I think being able to fly would be fabulous!

  35. robynC says:

pfft. i wanna set stuff on FIRE! are you kidding me? Pyrokenisis would come in handy for all those times when nothing but burning something down will do – but also, hey!, how cool of a party trick would THAT be?! heh. (um, i might need a back-up power of super self-control to go along with that… maybe. :) )

  36. CherryVanilla says:

Pyrokinesis!!!! But also the ability to fly … yeah … any of those.

  37. Na says:

I would like be able to time travel. That means if someone needs resecuing or I need escaping in a snap I could be out of there :)

  38. Vikki says:

Pyrokinesis. No contest. I want to burn stuff!!! But not books…never books. In fact I’d put my super power to good use by making people who do burn books extra crispy *evil laugh*
Fire is so pretty, and depending on what you burn it burns different colour *sigh* I love me some fire…it’s the only reason I took chemistry in school…turns out I sucked at it by hey…I got to play with fire for a year so I was happy :)

  39. Rochelle says:

I would have to go with the ability to teleport for sure, but I would want to be able to have enough strength to bring the people I love with me. What would be the point in going everywhere alone eh?

  40. Cerys Rose says:

Hrmmm… My first instinct would be to have super-powers so that I could eat chocolate and not get fat. But since that’s not real (yet) I’d most likely go for full body transformation into any object/animal. I mean, I could totally hide from people as a cat or a lamp or something small. That would be awesome!

  41. Tiffany B says:

If i could have any super hero ability, it would be to fly. That would be freaking awesome!

  42. Kat says:

The ability to stop or slow time so I could catch up on my to be read pile :p

  43. Donna says:

teleporting or mind reading – either would be fun…

  44. Rebe says:

I cannot wait to see the Avengers – it sounds great! And for my superpower I’d like to be able to fly. Sounds like so much fun!

  45. Karla says:

If I could choose any supernatural ability it would have to be telekinesis. I think it would be very kool to move things with your mind!

  46. Amy says:

Definitely want to teleport! It would be very convenient and I could get people to where they need ASAP.

    Thanks for the contest!

  47. It will be pyrokinesis ,just like Vlad, but just to fry my enemies ass. They hate me ! Julia, from Vlad’s country

  48. Anna Prewitt says:

To be able to pull thing out of thin air when needed.

  49. Maria says:

I would like to have telekinesis! Great giveaway!!

  50. If I could choose I would want pyrokinesis lik Vlad. But that’s if I could choose. If I were to have an ability it would probably be dreaming of the future because lately a few things I dreamed came true. So freaky!
