Paranormalcy by Kiersten WhiteParanormalcy

Published: Aug. 2010 (Harper Teen)
Purchase at: Book Depository or Amazon

Rating (out of 5): 4 stars

With witty writing, Paranormalcy is a fun YA read. Evie has worked for the International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA) for as long as she can remember. Unlike everyone else, she can see though all glamours. Hot hot vampires for her — she just sees the dead body underneath. Her life consists of bagging and tagging various paranormal creatures — vampires, werewolves, hags. Once they’re tagged, they get assigned jobs at IPCA.

She’s never questioned her role. (Though, she’s always felt the agency was too lenient with faeries. Her ex is one, and he just won’t leave her alone. Stupid faeries.) It can be kind of lonely being the only teenager, who has to experience typical teen life vicariously through a TV show.

So when an unknown paranormal is detained, she can’t help by try to learn more. Lend can shift his shape into anyone’s appearance. Once he and Evie manage to get on the same level — and he quits making his glamour look like her — the two bond. She finally has a shot at having a friend, even a boyfriend.

Except paranormals are being killed. IPCA can’t figure it out, and they are convinvced Lend has answers. Though the story Evie discovers her real role at the agency, runs for her life, saves others, learns the reason she can see though all glamours and falls in love.

Evie is wonderfully relatable. It’s hard not to love the way she adopts using “bleep” instead of curse words, her love of her pink taser and all things girly. We want her to be happy. We want her to find love. We really like it when she kisses Lend.

Paranormalcy deals with some heavy circumstances with a light tone. Kiersten White knows how to diffuse tension with a good laugh. She also managed to create a hottie who is practically an invisible boy in his natural form.

The story takes a bit to really ignite, but with such endearing characters you’ll be hooked quickly. We’re looking forward to seeing where Evie and Lend’s story will go. Paranormalcy is the first in a series. We’ll be sure to let everyone know when the next book is on the horizon.

We recently had the pleasure of meeting Kiersten White. (She’s super adorable and nice.) She was kind enough to sign a copy of Paranormalcy for one lucky Vampire Book Club reader.

In the novel, Evie’s best friend is a mermaid. It’s cooler and more functional than you’d expect. To enter for a signed copy of Paranormalcy, leave a comment answering the question: If you could have any paranormal creature as a best friend, what would it be?

Wow, never thought of that before. Hmm..a werewolf friend, just like Buffy having Oz before. 🙂 Though I would prefer a werewolf that has no problem with changing. 😀

Wow.. great question. I think I would have to choose a hot, sexy vamp or, if I could make one up, it would be a shifter who could change into a pegasus. There’s just something about the idea of flying on a horse 🙂

I would definitely pick a Fairy. After reading the Hollows series by Kim Harrison, I loved Jenks! I could take a fairy anywhere and have a constant laugh. It would be a perk if they could go from big to small anytime the wanted though. Great contest.

Now the important question: If you could have any paranormal creature as a best friend, what would it be?
My paranormal creature as a best friend would have to be a Witch. I am fascinated by Witches. Vampires, Wolves, fallen angels…they are so cool in a male sense (hehe) but to have a best friend, I would choose a witch. Not a bad witch or an evil witch but one with great power. Hopefully this best friend (male or female would not matter) would be able to teach me their craft then we would be best friend Witches. Writing spells, practicing potions, having a good time. That would be the IDEAL paranormal best friend!

Thanks for the chance to win!

  20. Jennifer says:

That’s a hard question. Since I love the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong, I would choose a werewolf (Elena preferably).

  21. Awesome, I love it when there is a fun question for a contest

I would love a Werewolf as a best friend, that was very much like Oz on Buffy. He would be really strong and be able to get those jars open for you — the only thing I worry about would be the shedding

I loved the book btw, it really reminded me of a younger Buffy, thanks for the chance to win a copy of my own (borrowed from the library)

  27. Meka says:

I know a lot of people have said this, but my best friend would be a werewolf. We would meet when I moved into the house next to his (yes, a guy)in the second grade. I would immediately like him because there’s a certain air of mystery about him. He’s quiet and keeps to himself, but once we became friends he would open up. I would find out that he’s a werewolf when we’re fifteen. I would be in mortal danger, and he would save me and in the process shift, revealing his true nature. I would fall in love with him, and he me. But there’s a problem: he’s dying. Werewolves need to be around others like themselves to survive. My werewolf has been isolated from other wolves because an heinous crime his father committed. I come up with the perfect idea, which he immediately rejects. Change me. Another werewolf has to make some difference, but my wbf refuses. As the weeks pass, my werewolf’s health deteriorates, and as he lays on his death bed I pull a Juliet…stabbing myself. My werewolf has a choice to make: let us both die or risk an eternity with the girl who loves him. Since my werewolf best friend is no fool, he chooses the latter. He turns me. He lives, I live, we live happily ever after. So, uh, yeah…if I could have any paranormal creature as a bf it would be a werewolf 😀

  28. Jamie says:

I want either a fairy or witch as a best friend. They seem so interesting! I actually have specific characters in mind, fairy: Puck from Iron King and witch: Hermoine from Harry Potter =). Haha.

  29. Gabrielle says:

If I were to pick a paranormal creature as a best friend, I would choose a witch because it would be really, really, really cool to watch her do spells and potions and all kinds of magic. I would want her to be so vile at first, and then, when she becomes my friend, she would become as tamed as me. And the best part of our friendship would be when we would get in so much trouble for sneaking out, or for using magic to protect ourselves. I would love having a witch best friend that could save the world, and would take me with her. It kinda reminds me of Lissa and Rose in Vampire Academy–only, Lissa’s a vampire.
