Alpha Showdown 2012 Round 2: Charles Cornick vs. King Dorian We just don’t see werewolves and faerie kings duke it out often enough. Luckily, we’ve pitted the dangerous and possessive werewolf Charles Cornick against the powerful, creative and quick King Dorian in Round 2 of the Alpha Showdown 2012. Read the pitches, then make the call. Who should advance to the next round in the Alpha Showdown? The poll at the end of this post will be open for two days. Remember,...

Over at Heroes & Heartbreakers: Killing for Love

Over at Heroes & Heartbreakers: Killing for Love Today I’m over at Heroes & Heartbreakers trying to figure out why we love seeing protective heroes slay the bad guys in front of the heroine. In addition to talking about those heroes in novels, I may reference Sons of Anarchy heavily. If you watch, you understand. There are certain things that when you explain aloud sound awful. For example, think of explaining the plot of The Hunger Games to a friend:...

Book Bits: Dark Swan, The Hollows, Elemental Assassin, snarkiness & more

Book Bits: Dark Swan, The Hollows, Elemental Assassin, snarkiness & more I’m not sure how to top yesterday’s post. There was Russian vampire goodness, but we must move forward. (But don’t forget to enter to win signed copies of the latest from both Jaye Wells and Kresley Cole.) In which Richelle explains Shadow Heir If you read my review of Richelle Mead’s final Dark Swan novel Shadow Heir, you know I liked it quite a bit but wasn’t at all pleased with the ending. There has...

Baby Shower for Eugenie Markham (Richelle Mead’s Dark Swan series)

Baby Shower for Eugenie Markham (Richelle Mead’s Dark Swan series) You read that right. Vampire Book Club is hosting a baby shower for Eugenie Markham, the heroine of Richelle Mead’s Dark Swan series. It’s one of my favorites, and, well, a fitting way to celebrate the closure of the series. The final book, Shadow Heir (VBC review), hits stores on Dec. 27 and if you’re up-to-date, you know our favorite shaman-turned-faerie-queen is pregnant with two little ones – a boy...

Alpha Showdown Round 6: Barrons vs. Dorian

Alpha Showdown Round 6: Barrons vs. Dorian We’re doing something a little different this round. Most of our battles have been relatively close calls, but even we admit it’s hard to stand against Barrons (we devoted our St. Patrick’s Day to the guy). So, we have two champions for him. That’s right. We have two people ready to convince you to vote for Fae King Dorian. And, then, you can tell us which supernatural alpha male should advance in the...

Alpha Showdown Round 3: Anita Blake vs. Eugenie Markham

Alpha Showdown Round 3: Anita Blake vs. Eugenie Markham The Alpha Showdown continues today with two powerful women. Both can draw magic and have some serious ties to the mortal realm. But when we put necromancer and vampire slayer Anita Blake up against shaman and faerie queen Eugenie Markham, who will come out on top is solely in your control. Bloggers have taken sides and will give you their best pitch as to why their kick-ass heroine deserves the title of...

Has a novel ever made you homesick?

Has a novel ever made you homesick? Last week I reviewed Kevin Hearne’s debut urban fantasy Hounded. The novel, featuring 2,100-year-old druid Atticus, is set in Tempe, Arizona. Mostly in downtown Tempe, which is a dense mashing of bars, indie shops and the best hamburgers ever. I say all this because I lived there for several years there. I attended Arizona State University when the journalism school still resided at its Tempe campus. So,...
